E-Resources Access Information

Linking to E-Resources

Generally speaking, you should never copy the URL in the navigation bar of an e-resource to share an e-resource.  This URL may contain sessions-specific information, it may change over time, or it may not work off campus.  For linking best practices see the Canvas and Library Integration research guide and Linking to Library Resources webpage.

On Campus and Off Campus Access

The majority of e-resources are available for use on and off campus. If a resource is only available on campus, there will be a notation on the A to Z Databases list entry, IUCAT record, or Full Text E-Journals portal listings.

To ensure off campus access works correctly, users must access resources via a library-supplied link (IUCAT, A-Z Databases list, IU-Link results, etc.) These links will authenticate the user through EZproxy which will then grant access for resources available off campus. Off campus access to IU Bloomington e-resources is restricted to IUB faculty, staff, and students. Unaffiliated users cannot access IUB e-resources remotely.

Text/Data Mining

Text mining and data mining, per Wikipedia, "refers to the process of deriving high-quality information from text".  Because text mining requires a high volume of downloads, it is often not permitted according to the signed license agreements.

Some providers do allow text mining, but special permission must be granted first.

If a user would like to do text mining work, they should contact Lori Duggan (lbadger@indiana.edu) first to see if permission can be granted.  If a user attempts to text mine without prior permission, a provider may block that user's IP address to prevent further downloading and the user may be asked to delete all the files he or she has already downloaded.
