Robert Irwin, James Turrell : Villa Panza by Michael Govan; Anna Bernardini; John Bowsher (Contribution by) The work of two central figures associated with West Coast contemporary art, Robert Irwin and James Turrell, is the subject of this breathtaking book that explores collaboration, artistic evolution, and themes of light, space, and perception. Robert Irwin and James Turrell, both originally from Los Angeles, are among the most recognized artists to have emerged in the 1960s. Irwin has worked in a variety of media, while Turrell's work is characterized by his engagement with pure light. One of the first champions of Irwin and Turrell's work was Giuseppe Panza, who commissioned installations for his 19th-century mansion in Northern Italy, now an art museum, part of FAI-Fondo Ambiente Italiano. Those installations are the focus of this book, the first to pair these two important artists. Opening with essays that examine the artists' seminal careers and trace their relationship to Panza, this volume examines both the original 1973 installations in the villa and recent works made specifically for the building's architecture.

James Turrell: Zug Zuoz by James Turrell (Artist) This publication is devoted to the relationship between two contrasting works by light artist James Turrell (*1943 in Los Angeles): Architectures of Light and Skyspaces, which explore the encounter between the architectural interior and the natural world outdoors. The focus here is on a permanent installation, Light Transport, which, at night, immerses the Zug train station in different colors, and the Skyspace Piz Uter in Zuoz--a plain, round structure made of stone, with a circular opening in its roof. These two works are used as examples of how Turrell's art unfolds, depending on whether it is in an urban or a natural space, and to show what sort of conclusions about his concept of art can be drawn from this. This extensive, carefully illustrated volume provides the viewer/reader with an experiential journey between the borders of seeing.

James Turrell: the Wolfsburg Project by James Turrell (Artist); Markus Bruderlin (Text by); Richard Andrews (Text by); Annelie Lutgens (Text by) James Turrell (born 1943) has been working with light in all its manifestations since the 1960s. Moving beyond the purely scientific investigation of optical phenomena, his works are designed to induce extraordinary experiences for the viewer, through the manipulation of light and color. The artist has been pursing this aim since 1974, when he began transforming the Roden Crater--an extinct volcano in the Arizona desert--into an observatory, inside of which visitors can immerse themselves in the embrace of an unusually pure experience of light. Turrell is currently realizing his largest installation to date in the 18-by-30-meter hall at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. This work resembles the Roden Crater project, inverted and rotated 90 degrees; it thus provides a foretaste of Turrell's still incomplete epic masterpiece. This publication documents and contextualizes the genesis of this extraordinary and ambitious work of art.
