The Accidental Possibilities of the City
by
Katherine Smith
Claes Oldenburg's commitment to familiar objects has shaped accounts of his career, but his associations with Pop art and postwar consumerism have overshadowed another crucial aspect of his work. In this reassessment, Katherine Smith traces Oldenburg's profound responses to shifting urban conditions, framing his enduring relationship with the city as a critical perspective and conceiving his art as urban theory. By examining disparate projects from New York to Los Angeles, she situates Oldenburg's innovations in local geographies and national debates.

Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, Cleveland's Free Stamp
by
Edward J. Olszewski
This is the first study of any sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen to examine the genesis of their art from conception to installation. Edward J. Olszewski has put together a narrative based on interviews with the artists, archival material from city records, and in-house corporate memoranda, as well as letters to the editor and political cartoons. He traces the development of the sculpture from the artists' first sketches and models to the installation of the completed work in its urban environment.

Strange Eggs
by
Claes Oldenburg
Made from found, printed imagery, Claes Oldenburg's Strange Eggs are enigmatic, surrealistic, and vastly different from the Pop art of the 1960s for which he soon became famous. These collages are characterized by self-contained forms, or "eggs," the artist made by melding cut fragments of photographic illustrations. While many of the pieces are unrecognizable, some original references are discernible: a piece of pie, the hind leg of a horse, the creased skin of a clenched fist, and the texture of concrete. These eighteen collages were first shown at the Menil Collection in 2012, and they are being published together for the first time, along with poems that Oldenburg wrote at the same time based on found imagery from his walks around New York's Lower East Side.

Claes Oldenburg
by
Achim Hochdörfer (Editor); Maartje Oldenburg; Barbara Schröder
In the early 1960s, Claes Oldenburg redefined the concept of sculpture. Published in conjunction with a comprehensive exhibition of the artist's early work, "Claes Oldenburg: Selected Writings 1956-1969" gathers together in a single volume the artist's key writings from the 1960s and several years from either side of the decade. Much of the publication is comprised of previously unpublished material, including sections of an extensive diary the artist kept during the formative years of the 1960s, and selection from an autobiographical manuscript that Oldenburg wrote in 1971.

Claes Oldenburg
In "Raw Notes," Claes Oldenburg has scrupulously collected all of the material relating to his performances. According to his specifications, the text in the book is typed rather than set and appears on only one side of the page.
