Simon Starling: Metamorphology by Simon Starling (Text by); Madeleine Grynsztejn (Foreword by); Dieter Roelstraete (Text by); Mark Godfrey (Text by); Janine Mileaf (Text by) Published for his first survey exhibition at a major American museum, Simon Metamorphology highlights a fundamental principle of Starling’s an almost alchemistic conception of the transformative potential of art, or of transformation as art. The Turner Prize–winning artist’s working method constitutes recycling, both literally and repurposing existing materials for new, artistic aims; retelling existing stories to produce new historical insights; linking, looping and remaking. This catalogue accompanies an exhibition organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in tandem with the Arts Club of Chicago, and features essays by MCA Chicago senior curator Dieter Roelstraete, Arts Club of Chicago executive director Janine Mileaf in collaboration with Simon Starling, and Tate Modern curator Mark Godfrey.

Simon Starling: the Nanjing Particles by Simon Starling (Artist); Susan Cross (Text by); Anthony Lee (Text by) The Nanjing Particles, published for an exhibition at MASS MoCA, is a unique object that takes as its departure a historical stereograph of Chinese laborers brought to Massachusetts in 1870 to break a strike. Starling literally mined the photographs for their history, extracting from their emulsion two silver particles. Enlarged one million times, the microscopic grains were translated into stainless steel sculptures fabricated by workers in Nanjing. Taking viewers through the installation and the work's fabrication process, the book reiterates the visual and conceptual play of the exhibition. The cover, which features die-cut peepholes, mimics the form of a structure in the exhibition. Readers can use the book itself as a low-tech stereoscope to view the photographs--printed on the inside covers--as a single three-dimensional image.

Simon Starling: Under Lime by Simon Starling (Artist); Angela Rosenberg (Text by); Julian Heynen (Text by); Dominic Eichler (Text by) Plants and images of plants, motors and power systems, physical and cultural transfers are the mainstay of Simon Starling's exhibition Under Lime. In the three installations on display, the unconventional use of machines as modes of transport and energy supplies is not only alluded to: it is seen in action. The ensemble demonstrates, simply yet strikingly, how vital it is that the precarious balance of the atmosphere be maintained both to sustain the natural processes of plant life and for the presentation of works of art.

Nachbau/Reconstructions by Bruno Haas (Introduction by) In Nachbau, the Turner Prize-winning artist Simon Starling delves into the presentation of art in shifting historical and architectural contexts. His starting point is the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany, one of the first to specialize in Modern art, founded at the beginning of the last century. In 1937, some 1,400 works from its collection--including pieces by artists such as Matisse and C zanne--were declared ""degenerate"" and locked away by the Nazi government. The museum itself was destroyed in 1944 and 1945, rebuilt after the war, and is now about to be partially demolished once again in the course of renovations. Working in the museum's confines, using four photographs of its galleries taken between 1929 and 1944 by Albert Renger-Patzsch, (a key photographer in the ""Neue Sachlichkeit,"" or ""New Objectivity""), Starling reconstructs that era's art placement and surroundings in a detailed, film set-like installation, bringing this charged historical background forward into the present. This two-volume artist's book on the project documents and elaborates on the installation and ideas it explores: the continuities, transformations and alterations that the artist shows shaping art and history.

Simon Starling by Janet Harbord; Francesco Manacorda (Contribution by); Dieter Roelstraete In the Survey, Dieter Roelstraete presents a comprehensive overview of Starling's work, examining circularity and serendipity and the their relationship to historical research. For the Interview, Francesco Manacorda and the artist discuss the central role of time in his work. Janet Harbord's Focus scrutinizes Wilhelm Noack oHG (2006) as an example of material cinema. Artist's Choice is a extract from Flann O'Brien's 1996 novel The Third Policeman, a fantastical conversation about bicycles swapping atoms with their riders. Artists Writings include five project statements, all of which consist, in varying proportions, of history, science and speculative fiction.
