EndNote 21

EndNote at Indiana University - Bloomington

Installation

You do not need a product key. The problem is that the file downloads as a zipped file and needs to be “unzipped” if you will. Here are step by step instructions to do that so it correctly inserts the product license:

  1. You want to start at the IU Software downloads page: https://iuware.iu.edu/Windows
  2. Click on PC or Mac for whichever type of computer you have. These are small buttons at the top of the “Software” list on the left side of the page.
  3. Click on “Office Tools” as the software category. You should see Endnote 21 as an option.
  4. Click the “red button” called EndNote 21.zip.

If you follow the directions on the installer notes, that will correctly install EndNote so that you don’t need to enter the product key.

IMPORTANT: Be sure you have Microsoft products all closed when you install EndNote. That way it will (hopefully) install the connecting piece to Microsoft Word.

If you have an earlier version of EndNote, you don't need to uninstall it (although they recommended it). The new version will override the old one and you will not lose all your EndNote Library/Libraries saved in the old version.

If you have a version earlier than EndNote X9.3 then EndNote 21 will change your file format. You will have a new copy of your library with the title "converted" in it. The original library remains.

EndNote Library and .DATA folder

When you create an EndNote library you also create a .DATA folder with the same name as the library.

Keep the two in the same place, and do not lose either.  They work together, and the .DATA folder will contain information the Library will use as well as any attachments added to references.
