EndNote at Indiana University - Bloomington

The EndNote 20 download comes as a zip file

Zipped files need to be unzipped
To unzip the file
Go to the zipped file and right click on it
Choose the extract command
You will have two files now.
Click on the install program and run it

Run install EndNote 20.1

Before you start installation
Back up your EndNote libraries
Make sure Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) is closed
If you have an earlier version of EndNote, you don't need to uninstall it (although they recommended it). The new version will override the old one and you will not lose all your EndNote Library/Libraries saved in the old version.

If you have a version earlier than EndNote X9.3 then EndNote 20 will change your file format. You will have a new copy of your library with the title "converted" in it. The original library remains.

EndNote Library and .DATA folder

When you create an EndNote library you also create a .DATA folder with the same name as the library.

Keep the two in the same place, and do not lose either.  They work together, and the .DATA folder will contain information the Library will use as well as any attachments added to references.
