To add a reference manually (or copy and paste) go to the Collect tab and choose New Reference.
A template opens
Choose the reference type you need (book, book section, journal),enter the bbliographic information in the appropriate fields,
Save.
The reference becomes part of "All My References" and you may assign it to a group as well

 

 

Exporting directly from databases

Most databases  offer a direct export feature for sending references directly into EndNote desktop or EndNote Online
EBSCO, for example allows you to choose selected citations and send them to EndNote Online
After selecting references to export, click on Export
Choose the radio button to export directly to EndNote Online
(If you do not see an EndNote option, choose, the format  filename.RIS)
Click on Save

If the results appears as a download, click on the download and the references will import into EndNote Online

You can search for references from within EndNote Online
Go to Collect
Go to Online Search
Click on Select Favorites
From the list copy to Favorites the institutions you wish to use.
Hide the list
From the favorites, select the institution you wish to search.
Click on Connect
Use the template to do your search
When the results are retrieved, select the items you want to include in your list of references and place them, if you wish, into one of the groups you have created.

 

Capture

The Capture tool scans the bibliographic information presented on a Web page and creates a reference that you can save to new or existing group. If no group is specified, the reference is saved to Unfiled.
When the Capture tool is installed, you will see in your browser

To capture a reference:
1.Navigate to page that presents bibliographic data. (Refer to the list of Capture Compatible Sources.)
2.Click the Capture button in the EndNote Online toolbar or the Capture References bookmarklet button.
3.Complete or modify any of the reference fields.
4.Click the Save to button and select EndNote Online. (Alternately, select EndNote to save the reference to your library in EndNote Desktop.)
Multiple records will go into unfiled
single records will come up as a editable entry
Not all web sites are compatible with Capture

 

Capture Reference

To install the Capture tool, just drag the Capture Reference button to your Bookmarks bar (also known as "Favorites Bar" or "Bookmarks Toolbar"). In some browsers, you may need to right-click and select "Add to Favorites" or "Bookmark This Link."

To use it, browse to a page you like and click the Capture Reference button in the Bookmarks bar. The Capture Reference window will open. Follow the instructions in the window.

 

Importing with a filter

This feature is seldom used now
Some vendors require you to export in a format that EndNote can import with an import filter
If you do not see an EndNote option, choose, the format  filename.RIS
Choose to save the file with an appropriate name (one you can remember)
To import the data, go to the collect tab and choose Import
Browse to the file you have saved
Use the drop-down menu under "import option"
For .RIS file the import filter is RefMan.RIS
Select which group you wish to download the results into
Click on import

 

Google Scholar


Click on the "Save" button.

 

Follow these steps to import search results into EndNote:

  1. After performing a search on Google Scholar click on the "Import into EndNote" link for the reference you want to import.
  2. If you are presented with a window asking if you want to "Open" or "Save" the file, choose to open the file.
  3. A "Select a Reference Library" window will appear, use this window to select the EndNote library you want the reference imported into.
