Studio Craft at Indiana University

History

IU’s Department of Freehand and Mechanical Drawing was established in 1895. Alfred Mansfield Brooks, the first art instructor in the new department, was its chair until 1922. The department became known as the “Department of Fine Arts” as early as 1904, and later as the “School of Fine Arts.” Robert E. Burke acted as chair from 1922 to 1941, when Henry Radford Hope took over the position until 1967. The school was renamed the “Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts” in 1989 in honor of the former chair. In 2016, Fine Arts Studio (FINS) and Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design (AMID) merged to form the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design within the College of Arts and Sciences. The school offers coursework in ceramics, digital art, fibers, graphic design, metals & jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
