Studio Craft at Indiana University

Teaching

Karl began teaching ceramics part-time at the Hull House in Chicago while he worked for the Armour Research Foundation in 1944. He also taught at the Institute of Design in Chicago during his time in the city. In 1945, Karl was hired by Henry R. Hope (head of the Fine Arts Department) to establish the ceramics program at Indiana University. He taught courses on ceramic history and technique and held community summer pottery classes in the basement of the science hall. Karl was the only full-time ceramics instructor until 1974. He was known for his humble nature and commitment to lifelong learning.
