A guide to OA publishing options

IU Bloomington OA Article Publishing Fund

IU Libraries is discontinuing the Open Access Article Publishing Fund 

This fund has supported faculty open access publishing since 2019, initially as a pilot and then through joint annual funding in partnership with IU Research.

 We recognize that researchers will need alternative funding sources for open access fees. 

Alternative options to explore:

  • Check if your research funder provides open access publishing support
  • Review our institutional publishing agreements at https://guides.libraries.indiana.edu/OApublishing - please carefully note the eligibility criteria and end date of each agreement when deciding whether to submit to covered journals
  • Investigate whether your department has discretionary funds for publication costs
  • Consider journals with lower or no article processing charges – you can find this information in the Directory of Open Access Journals
  • Explore traditional publishing with self-archiving rights and deposit an open access version in our institutional repository IUScholarWorks, in line with publisher permissions.

 We remain committed to supporting faculty research dissemination. If it would be beneficial, we would be happy to host a workshop on open science/open scholarship for your department. Please contact iusw@iu.edu for more information. 

IU Libraries now has no-cost or discount open-access publishing arrangements in place with several publishers. Please see the relevant pages in this guide for more information on those programs.

When funding is not available

We recognize that Open Access publishing can, at times, come with high expenses for researchers. The Scholarly Communication Department is committed to helping IU authors make their work openly available. In addition, many grant funders require you to make your research open access.

If article publishing charges are a barrier to making your article open access, we can help you deposit a version of your work in IUScholarWorks.

We check publisher policies, or contact publishers directly for consent, and help you deposit a copy of the manuscript submitted to the publisher (pre-print), or the peer-reviewed manuscript (postprint) to one or both of our repositories. You can check for funder policies here and here.

IUScholarWorks is indexed by Google and Google Scholar, which increases the discoverability of your work. You can add the open access version of your work to your Google Scholar profile. Having an open access version ensures access to your work when an interested party discovers it.
