Art and Gender

Representations of older transgender people are nearly absent from our culture and those that do exist are often one-dimensional. For over five years, photographer Jess T. Dugan and social worker Vanessa Fabbre traveled throughout the United States creating To Survive on this Shore: Photographs and Interviews with Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Older Adults. Seeking subjects whose lived experiences exist within the complex intersections of gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, sexuality, socioeconomic class, and geographic location, they traveled from coast to coast, to big cities and small towns, documenting the life stories of this important but largely underrepresented group of older adults. The featured individuals have a wide variety of life narratives spanning the last ninety years, offering an important historical record of transgender experience and activism in the United States. The resulting monograph provides a nuanced view into the struggles and joys of growing older as a transgender person and offers a poignant reflection on what it means to live authentically despite seemingly insurmountable odds.

Jess T. Dugan has created intimate portraits that engage with issues of identity, sexuality, gender, and community.Every Breath We Drew works within the framework of queer experience and actively constructed masculinity. These portraits examine the intersection between private, individual identity and the search for intimate connection with others. Jess T. Dugan is an artist whose work explores issues of gender, sexuality, identity, and community. She earned a BFA in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, a Master of Liberal Arts in Museum Studies from Harvard University, and an MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago. British-Israeli photographer Yishay Garbasz's mother was born in Berlin, escaped from the Nazis to Holland, was deported to Westerbork, then to Theresienstadt. Via Auschwitz-Birkenau, she arrived in Christianstadt, then marched to Bergen-Belsen, where she was liberated by British forces. In this volume, Garbasz traces her mother's path with her large-format camera.

Selections are reprinted in full color, with an introduction by activist Tiq Milan and a new preface by the founding editors. Amos Macis a writer, artist, and producer based in Los Angeles. His photography has been featured in publications including theNew York Times,Interview,Vogue Italia, andOUT. A love of storytelling influenced his leap into television, where he works across scripted and documentary series. Rocco Kayiatos is a writer, organizer, educator, and former hip hop artist (stage name Katastrophe). He was the head of the video education department at BuzzFeed and continues to produce content in the new media space. He is a man of trans experience who began his transition in 2001.

Original Plumbing also known as OP is a quarterly magazine focused on "the culture and lifestyle of transgender men."[1] The magazine was started in September 2009 in the San Francisco Bay Area, by editors-in-chief Amos Mac and Rocco Kayiatos. The magazine was later published and distributed from both Brooklyn, New York, and later Los Angeles, California.[1] Mac and Kayiatos created Original Plumbing to bring visibility to the trans male community. At the time of the magazine's conception, trans men received little to no representation on TV, in mainstream film, or in other “LGB”-focused magazines.[2] It is the aim of Original Plumbing to represent "true diversity in the female-to-male (FTM) trans community; in size, age, body, surgery, hormone use and non-use."

TRANSLADY FANZINE is a photographic periodical that focuses on one woman of trans experience per issue, showcasing vivid photographs of the model as she wishes to be seen, featuring exclusive text of her experience in her own words.

Photographer and activist Zanele Muholi highlights the ruthless and often violent discrimination faced by black lesbians in South Africa. Through frank and intimate photographic portrayals--including the scars of hate crimes, the bonds between lovers, and the life lines of women living in society's margins--this compilation inspires a deeper understanding of blackness, the female form, skin tones, body types, and varying sexualities in a way that is unprecedented in South Africa.

Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness is the long-awaited monograph from one of the most powerful visual activists of our time. The book features over ninety of Muholi's evocative self-portraits, each image drafted from material props in Muholi's immediate environment. A powerfully arresting collection of work, Muholi's radical statements of identity, race, and resistance are a direct response to contemporary and historical racisms. As Muholi states, "I am producing this photographic document to encourage individuals in my community to be brave enough to occupy spaces--brave enough to create without fear of being vilified. . . . To teach people about our history, to rethink what history is all about, to reclaim it for ourselves--to encourage people to use artistic tools such as cameras as weapons to fight back." With more than twenty written contributions from curators, poets, and authors, alongside luxurious tritone reproductions of Muholi's images, Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness is as much a manifesto of resistance as it is an autobiographical, artistic statement.
