Diversity Resources from IU Libraries

About this Page

About this Page:

As an archives, our primary mission is to collect, organize, preserve and make accessible records documenting Indiana University's origins and development and the activities and achievements of its officers, faculty, students, alumni and benefactors. With an estimated 18,000 cubic feet of records and papers in all formats, the University Archives is the largest and most comprehensive source of information on the history and culture of Indiana University.

In archives and special collections, it can be very difficult to point to specific items and collections as representative of diversity. It really involves much more in-depth research and interpretation and as such, nearly all of our collections could be potential sources for research on diversity. However, we have identified some processed administrative records, personal papers, and other resources that can be excellent starting points. There’s much that has not yet been described – contact the Archives if you do not find what you are looking for! archives@indiana.edu

University Archives Resources

  • Arbutus Yearbooks: The Arbutus Yearbooks are located on the north side of the wall in the reading room. Through IUL’s Ancestry.com subscription, you can access a nearly full run of the yearbooks. To locate: Scroll to bottom of Ancestry home page->Schools, Directories & Church Histories->US School Yearbooks->on right hand side, choose Indiana-Bloomington-Indiana University. Later yearbooks can be accessed at: https://www.iuyearbook.com/page/archives.
  • Indiana Alumni Magazine: Full runs of the print Indiana Alumni Quarterly and Indiana Alumni Magazine are located on the north side wall in the Archives reading room. IAQ and select IAM can be accessed via the HathiTrust:

  • Indiana Daily Student (IDS):The Indiana Daily Student spanning 1867-1922 can be searched in the NewspaperARCHIVE (with some spotty coverage); however, the later papers will need to be searched on microfilm. Microfilm can be accessed on the 2nd floor of the East Tower in the Wells Library. The Archives also has an index for the IDS that goes through 1938, which will help fill the gap between what is in the NewspaperARCHIVE and the microfilm.

  • IU Bulletins:The IU Bulletins contain valuable information about faculty and university departments. In earlier editions, all students are listed. Access many of these via the HathiTrust:

Later bulletins can be accessed online at http://bulletins.iu.edu/iub.

  • IU Websites on Archive-It:The Indiana University Web Sites collection is an extension of the holdings of the University Archives which is responsible for the appraisal, acquisition, preservation and use of University records of permanent value and the private records of individuals and organizations associated with Indiana University. The Archive includes sites created by the University community.
