Focusing predominantly on Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, New York, and towns and cities in North Carolina this collection presents multiple aspects of the African American community through pamphlets, newspapers and periodicals, correspondence, official records and in-depth oral histories, revealing the prevalent challenges of racism, discrimination and integration, and a unique African American culture and identity. Also featured is a rich selection of visual material, including photographs, maps and ephemera.

The wide range of material included in American Indian Histories and Cultures presents a unique insight into interactions between American Indians and Europeans from their earliest contact, continuing through the turbulence of the American Civil War, the on-going repercussions of government legislation, right up to the civil rights movement of the mid- to late-twentieth century. This resource contains material from the Newberry Library’s extensive Edward E. Ayer Collection; one of the strongest archival collections on American Indian history in the world.

This resource contains materials from cultural studies of music from across the globe. Produced in collaboration with the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive and the Ethnomusicology Archive at the University of Washington, the material in this collection includes thousands of audio field recordings and interviews, educational recordings, film footage, field notebooks, slides, correspondence and ephemera from over 60 fields of study.

American Indian Newspapers presents the publications of a range of communities, with an extensive list of periodicals produced in the United States and Canada, including Alaska, Arizona, British Columbia, California, Nevada and Oklahoma, from 1828 to 2016. Representing a huge variety in style, production and audience, the newspapers include national periodicals as well as local community news and student publications. This digital collection provides exciting research opportunities into a range of subjects from an Indigenous perspective, including the civil rights era and American Indian Movement (AIM), education, environmentalism, land rights and cultural representation. This resource has been developed with, and has only been made possible by, the permission and contribution of the newspaper publishers and Tribal Councils concerned.

Provides access to primary source documents related to prejudice, segregation and racial tensions in America. Includes survey material, interviews and statistics, as well as educational pamphlets, administrative correspondence, and photographs and speeches from the Annual Race Relations Institutes.

Government documents are essential in the study of any issue surrounding African American history and culture. Hundreds of items documenting government action (or inaction) can be found throughout our holdings. It is important to note that many primary sources contain outdated and, in some cases, offensive language and it is important to view them within the proper context of the period. As citizens it is your right to have access to these documents and as students it is your responsibility to use them whenever possible.

This guide provides information and resources for those who may identify as asexual, or "ace" for short, whether you aren't sure, or for others who want to know more. On Monday, May 25, 2020, Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd while Floyd was handcuffed and being held on the ground. Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, even after Floyd said repeatedly "I can't breathe" and after Chauvin was told that Floyd was unconscious. In the days to follow, protests erupted across the United States and around the world, not only about Floyd's death, but about police violence against black Americans and systemic racism in general. Floyd's death followed those of other Black people who had been shot and killed, including 26-year-old Breonna Taylor in her home by the Louisville (KY) Metro Police; 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, who was jogging near his home in Glynn County, GA; and 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks, who was shot in the back while running away from police The vast majority of protests were peaceful and called for an end to systemic racism, more transparency of accusations of officer misconduct, an end to qualified immunity, disarming police officers, and redirecting funds from police departments to social service organizations.

The study of gender as a fundamental category of social and cultural analysis, while also considering the intersection of gender with other substantive categories of identity, including sexuality, race, religion, class, disability, and nationality. Gender studies encourages studies to think beyond common sense accounts of gender to examine its complex construction in a range of historical epochs, cultural arenas, and global processes. The field of gender studies utilizes a wide variety of innovative approaches and methodologies, broad in reach, yet unified through a critical angle of vision.
