History and Philosophy of Science

About the collection

The Indiana University Bloomington Department of the History and Philosophy of Science was founded in 1960, the first of its kind at a North American university. The primary clientele for the Libraries' collections in this area are faculty and graduate students in the History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine Department, but also scholars and students from other departments who are pursuing interdisciplinary research and studies.

In addition to scholarly monographs and journals collected by the Libraries since the department was founded in 1960, the History and Philosophy of Science collection profits from Indiana University's long history of strong science programs. Collection strengths include medieval and early modern science, and alchemy; and the history and philosophy of physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.

The bulk of the collection is housed in the Wells Library and the Auxiliary Library Facility. Some materials remain in the Sciences Library.
