Diversity in Education

Diversity efforts have long played an important role in the management of U.S. public education. Perhaps the most famous of these efforts was the 1954 Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education, which ended official policies of racial segregation in public schools, and subsequent endeavors to integrate the U.S. school system. More information about governmental policies of school integration is available at the Library of Congress' webpage for school segregation and integration.

Policymaking has played a key role in school inclusivity, and educational diversity efforts have inspired impactful governmental discussion and legislation. Lawmakers during the 1970s debated policies of busing students across school lines to further racial integration, for example, and the 1972 federal law Title IX forbids sex discrimination in federally funded education programs. The full inclusion of diverse groups within the U.S. education system remains a pressing topic to this day, and one that policy makers seek to address. This Department of Education Equity Action Plan from 2023 contains examples of policies intended to increase diversity in schooling. Listed below are some guiding resources about diversity efforts in U.S. public education.
