The LibGuides Guide

This guide orients librarians and other library workers on the fundamentals of using and creating LibGuides

Integrate LibGuides into Canvas

To embed a LibGuide in Canvas, you’ll enter the course information within the metadata field of the LibGuide in order for your LibGuide to appear as the Research Help link in the course (replacing the preloaded guide).

  1. Log in to the Canvas site for the course and get the course parameter (e.g. course prefix, section number, 5-digit identifier, etc. – all that stuff at the top of the page)
  2. Log in to LibGuides and pull up the one you’d like to appear in the course.  (Note: Make sure your guide is published before you do anything else; otherwise it won’t appear in Canvas.)  Click on the tool gear in the upper right corner, then click ‘Guide Metadata.’
    1. Screenshot showing Custom Metadata menu option.
  3. Click on ‘Custom Metadata.’
    1. In the column under Name, type in LTI.
    2. In the column under ‘Value,’ enter the course parameter (prefix, section, etc.).
    3. Under ‘Public?’ check the box, then click ‘Close.’
      1. Screenshot of LibGuides Custom Metadata dialog box.
  4. Refresh the page showing the Canvas course site, then click on ‘Library Research Guide.’
