What is SoTL?

Here at Indiana University, we believe teaching should be viewed as a scholarly activity to be valued as community property. As such, faculty are encouraged to:

  • Systematically analyze evidence of student learning,

  • Situate their work within existing literature,

  • Collaborate with other faculty both within or across disciplines, and

  • Contribute to the body of knowledge about teaching and learning by dissemination of their research findings through appropriate, and often times innovative means.

SoTL Resources at Indiana University Bloomington

This LibGuide provides resources and information to help kickstart your SoTL research. Since SoTL research takes place across all disciplines, I encourage you to contact and work with your subject librarian to identify subject-specific resources that can be used to find SoTL research. Additionally, Christina Jones in the education library and the IU Libraries Teaching and Learning department are also wonderful resources to tap into.

SoTL Professional Organizations

The International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Inc. serves faculty members, staff, and students who care about teaching and learning as serious intellectual work. Through building intellectual and collaborative infrastructure, the Society supports the associational life that fosters scholarly work about teaching and learning.
