Government Information, Maps & Microform Services (GIMMS) is located on the second floor of Herman B Wells Library on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Included in GIMMS are local, state, and federal government information and data resources, the largest map collection in Indiana, GIS services, and microform services.
This guide brings together a comprehensive list of GIMMS research and information resources available to United States veterans.

Federal Programs
- U.S. Department of Veterans AffairsThe VA administers the many federal programs available to veterans of the US military. This is the first place to check for Health Care, Disability, Education and Training, Careers and Employment, Pension, Housing Assistance, Burials and Memorials, Life Insurance, Records, Service Member Benefits, Family Member Benefits, and more.
- Military OneSource:“Veterans & Military Funeral Honors-Resources“ (Dept. of Defense)OneSource is a webportal for military personnel to access services and advice. This is their page on veterans' resources.
- Homeless Veterans: Events (VA)"Stand Downs are typically one- to three-day events during which VA staff and volunteers provide food, clothing and health screenings to homeless and at-risk Veterans. In addition, Veterans also receive referrals for health care, housing solutions, employment, substance use treatment, mental health counseling and other essential services." This is a calendar of upcoming Stand Down Events.
- Military and Veterans (USA.gov)A general portal for services for current military members and veterans. USA.gov is always a good place to begin when you're not sure what's available.
State and Local Programs
- Center for Veteran and Military Students (Indiana University)“[H]elps veterans and military-connected students make the transition from the military to IU and provides support and resources during their time on campus.”
- Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs"[F]ocused on aiding and assisting Hoosier veterans and qualified family members or survivors, who are eligible for benefits or advantages provided by Indiana and the U.S. government."

- Volunteer Network: Military/Veteran's Affairs (City of Bloomington)The city maintains a list of non-profit organizations in the community who need the help of volunteers. Here is the list of organizations centered on military and veteran's issues.
Statistics and History
- National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics (VA)The Veterans Administration "[develops] statistical analyses and reports on a broad range of topics, [operates] VA’s data and statistics Web portal to disseminate Veteran data and statistics, and [develops] estimates and projections on Veteran populations."
- Topic: Veterans (US Census)"Demographic, social, and economic data on veterans are collected on several U.S. Census Bureau surveys. These data are used for policy analysis, program planning, and budgeting of veteran programs."
- Veterans’ Service Records (NARA)"Request military records and learn about other services for yourself or a family member." You can even find out how to replace a lost military medal or award.
- Veterans History Project (American Folklife Center, Library of Congress)“The Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.”

- CRS Reports: "Veterans" (Library of Congress)Read what your federal congress members have read. Reports from the Congressional Research Service are compiled on all manner of topics for the Congress's use. I've used the search term "Veterans" here, but you can search for whatever you'd like.

Microform Services
Why microforms?
Many of our materials are available on microform, sometimes only so. Do not be afraid! GIMMS equipment views and scans microfilm, microfiche, and microopaques. Images can be scanned in PDF, TIFF, JPEG, PNG and BMP formats and saved to CD, flash drive, or any Internet file storage service. Scans can also be printed like any other document.
