Introduction to Library Research

A companion guide for the workshop of the same name.

What's Different From Print?

Your subject librarians are buying more ebooks every year! These are a great option for quick reference, or if you don't have time to come to the library. It's also a great way to get brand new books published this year.

You can search for them the same way you search for print books in IUCAT- but if you want to see only ebooks, simply limit to "ebooks" using the limiter on the lefthand side of the search screen as you do so.

Keep In Mind

Vendors have different levels of restrictions for ebooks. Some can only be read by one person at a time online, while some you can download the entire book. Some even allow for unlimited seats.

As you log into a book through the "Access for Bloomington" button in IUCAT, keep an eye on the book's details page to see what kind of access it allows, so you can know how easily you might be able to read this item (especially if you need it for teaching or your own schoolwork.)

HathiTrust- Older Books, and Some New Stuff Too

We have an awesome partnership with HathiTrust, that allows ebook access to titles we already have in print, as well as some we don't. You might find yourself linked to this resource from some books in IUCAT, but you can also search it separately.
