Film History Research Guide

This guide was created to help researchers and students use library resources to do historical research in cinema.

Searching for DVDs & Video

Wells Library has a large collection of DVDs and VHS tapes available for students and researchers. Browsing for movies can be complicated if you don't know what you're looking for. You will find some tips for finding movies through IUCAT. If Wells does not have what you need you can also make an ILL request by searching WorldCat and placing a request.

Movie titles can be searched on IUCAT and WorldCat by title, director, publisher (DVD or video label), studio/production company, stars, etc. Remember that IUCAT and WorldCat allows you to limit your searches by format. Both can limit your searches to DVD or VHS.

Here are some examples of keyword searches that will retrieve video holdings on IUCAT or WorldCat:

  • Searches by title: Citizen Kane
  • Searches by director (author): Hawks, Howard
  • Searches by DVD/Video label (publisher): Criterion Collection
  • Searches by studio (keyword): American International Pictures
  • Searches by genre (subject): Film noir
