ENG X153 Critical Reading and Reasoning

Learning Objectives, Teaching Approaches

Learning objectives relevant to X153 may include:

  • Understand the purpose and value of conducting research and using sources in academic work.
  • Recognize major library resources and services for getting started with research.
  • Understand that different types of information sources serve different functions.
  • Recognize that certain research tools are more/less appropriate for locating these varying types of sources (e.g., Google vs. library databaese). 
  • Develop basic strategies for finding and evaluating sources relevant to course content.
  • Understand research as a creative process of exploration and discovery.

Ways to incorporate the library and research into X153 include:

  • Discuss the role and importance of research in academic work and in critical thinking.
  • Brainstorm topics/issues related to The McDonaldization of Society (or to other course resources).
  • Discuss a variety of information source types, differing purposes of these source types, and helpful tools for locating them.
  • Identify search terms for finding relevant resources.
  • Finding course-relevant books through the IUCAT library catalog
  • Finding articles through OneSearch@IU or other library databases.
