EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley

EndNote is a citation management software published by the company Clarivate. You can download the software to your computer from IU Ware, as the IU libraries have a site license for the product.

Citation management software is helpful to gather resources during research. EndNote allows you to attach PDFs and notes to your citations, organize them into collections for different projects, and create bibliographies. The company releases updates periodically to work with new online sources and new bibliographic styles.

Zotero (pronounced "zoh-TAIR-oh") is an open-source citation management software that collects, manages, and cites research sources. It's easy to use, has a web and desktop version, and (best of all!) it's free.

Citation management software is helpful for students and faculty as they gather resources during research. Zotero allows you to attach PDFs, notes, and images to your citations, organize them into collections for different projects, and create bibliographies. The company releases updates periodically to work with new online sources and new bibliographic styles.

Mendeley, pronounced "men-duh-lay", is one of several options for citation management software. Starting in 2020, their focus is on an online client that has a matching desktop version, called Mendeley Reference Manager. Mendeley Desktop is still available, but it is no longer being updated. The mobile app is no longer available.

This software will allow you to:

  • Create and manage citations of books, articles, videos, and more
  • Import citations from databases, websites, and library catalogs
  • Upload PDFs you have on your computer to find their citation information
  • Collaborate with other researchers online
  • Find relevant papers based on what you’re reading
  • Highlight and annotate papers and share those notes with others
  • Organize using groups, tags, and filters
