Federal Taxes: Do it Yourself

Most of what you need to file your federal taxes yourself can be found online, including free, computer assisted filing programs for those who qualify. Even if you don't qualify, you can still fill out and file your forms entirely online if you want to. If you need help filling out the forms, see our "Get Help" page for in-person assistance.

Answers basic questions like "Do I need to file a tax return?" in an interactive format.
Free File for Taxpayers
People who earn under $79,000 (2023) may use free software to calculate and file their taxes. People who earn more than that may still download fillable forms and file electronically on their own. Unless you hire someone to prepare your taxes for you, you should not have to pay a fee to file electronically. Be aware that some companies have tried, successfully, to make people pay for what should be a free service. For more information, see this 2022 press release regarding TurboTax.
