If you try a basic keyword search in IUCAT but find that your search results are too broad, you can narrow your results by using the Advanced Search in IUCAT to search by subject. For example, if you are looking for a Spanish-English dictionary, go to the Advanced Search page, change the search field from "All Fields" to "Subject", and enter "Spanish language--Dictionaries--English". (You could also search for "English language--Dictionaries--Spanish" and get results that are similar, though not necessarily identical.) In the search filters on the left side of the page, under "Format", select "Book".
When using exact subject search terms (enclosed in quotation marks), pay attention to how they are formatted, including the capitalization, as seen in the example below. Alternatively, you can do a subject keyword search (without quotation marks), but your search results might include some items which are less relevant.
You can also limit your search by campus or library by using the search filters on the left side of the page.
After you enter your search, click on "Availability" to see whether an item in the search results is available to be checked out. Generally, items in stacks areas circulate, but items in reference areas have limited or no circulation.
If you prefer an online dictionary, you can limit your search by format to "E-Book" instead of "Book". In this case, you will also need to limit your search results to your campus.
When searching for multilingual dictionaries, different search strategies may produce slightly different results, depending on variations in how items are cataloged. For example, to search for Spanish-English dictionaries which include one or more additional languages, you can add the subject, "Dictionaries, Polyglot", to the search used above:
However, the IUCAT records for some multilingual dictionaries might not include the subject, "Dictionaries, Polyglot", so you can also try a subject keyword search combining "dictionaries" with the specific languages you are looking for:
