The materials covered on this page exemplify evolving conceptions of Black American identity in American paintings, prints, and photography of the twentieth century. Featured are the controversial Indiana Murals of Thomas Hart Benton (1932-33), book illustration by Elizabeth Catlett and Benny Andrews, the photographs of Roy DeCarava from Langston Hughes's Sweet Flypaper of Life (1955), and the iconic mid-century photojournalism of Edwin Rosskam and Will Counts.
