In-depth research consultations (kind of like library tutors)

Research Desk: Research Assistant, 7-12 hours/week

Positions are filled for the 2024-2025 academic year. 

The Wells Library Learning Commons seeks Research Assistants to support the research and learning needs of undergraduate and graduate students as they access and use the resources of the IU Libraries. Research Assistants will work with Indiana University students to provide research services and will assist the Teaching & Learning Department with outreach and programming to gain practical library, information literacy instruction, and public services experience.  This includes working with service partners in the Learning Commons to offer collaborative student services.  

Research Assistants will be expected to work 7-12 hours/week, including a mandatory weekly training meeting and 2 desk shifts. The Research Desk is open Monday-Friday, 11am - 5pm. 

Pay rate: $15.00 per hour

Specific duties include:

  • Providing in-person and online research consultations
  • Using student-centered learning strategies to teach research skills
  • Answering research-related questions in person, via email, and over chat
  • Leading library tours
  • Leading drop-in workshops, and other student-focused or course-related instructional services 
  • Assisting with events, programming, and student staff training
  • Additional project work as identified or by interest.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as an IUB graduate student in the Information and Library Science department
  • Demonstrated ability to interact courteously and effectively with a diverse population
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexibility, creativity, attention to detail.
  • Willingness and ability to learn about new resources, databases, and services
  • Ability to maintain knowledge of and follow library policies and procedures

Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with research skills, especially independent or directed research projects in any discipline
  • Tutoring or other instructional experience
