Trans Bodies, Trans Selves: A Resource for the Transgender Community (Oxford University Press, 2014) is a guide for transgender and gender-nonconforming people of all ages and backgrounds. Each chapter is written by different authors so that readers can gain an understanding of various topics from multiple perspectives. Additionally, personal stories in the form of narratives, illustrations, and survey responses are offered throughout to add even more voices to the conversation and give readers the opportunity to interact with the text. Many of the chapters are beneficial to young readers; however, Section 3, “Health and Wellness,” and Section 5, Chapter 20, “Youth” provide information about mental health within the transgender community, mental health services, and the experiences of transgender youth. Chapter 20, “Youth,” discusses coming out at school and at home, transitioning, dating and sex, mental health and self-esteem, trans-friendly colleges, and youth activism. Additional resources are provided throughout the book in the form of sidebars and reference lists at the end of each chapter. Note: this title is available via INSPIRE.
